Proyect “Women and the Sea” on Isla Venado, Costa Rica. Sponsored by the Swiss Ocean and Research Foundation and the government of Costa Rica. Period 2000-2002. Estimated budget: $90,000 in cash and close to $1.500,000 in kind.
The original project, aimed at organizing 3 productive projects on Isla Venado. In line with the strategy proposed by the working group, this became an effective integrated coastal-marine management plan (and perhaps the only one in the country to date) for the island. Over 22 state institutions have participated, consequently resulting in a shift in the range of local potentials and opportunities, and a significant shift in the operating behavior of this community. The hope is to replicate, as of 2003, this experience in other under-privileged coastal communities.
