International Development Research Center (IDRC) Community-based Coastal Resource Management (CBCRM) Program in the Caribbean

The CBCRM program in the Caribbean is an initiative of the International Development Research Center (IDRC) in Canada, realized in collaboration with the CARICOM Fisheries Unit in Belize, the International Ocean Institute for Latin America and the Caribbean in Costa Rica and the Université Laval in Canada. The CBCRM program aims at supporting Caribbean institutions to undertake interdisciplinary project research for the solving of problems related to coastal resource management in order to reach a better equilibrium between biological conservation, economic viability and social equity incentives in their sustainable development. The program gives countenance to projects reflecting the interconnectedness between various stakeholders (governmental agencies, research centers, NGO's, tourism, community stakeholders and organizations representatives), economic activities (fishing, tourism, agriculture, ancillary activities such as mining and petroleum) and coastal ecosystems (mangroves, coral reefs, lagoons, rivers, etc.). During its three-year first phase (1999-2001), the program supported 16 interdisciplinary research projects in various Caribbean countries: Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, St. Lucia, Trinidad, U.S. Virgin Islands.
