Symposium-Workshop: Research for the development of coastal aquaculture and fisheries in the coastal zone of Central America
10-14 May 1999, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Objectives of the symposium
Evaluate various options for aquaculture and fisheries in the coastal zone of Central America;
Analyze the state of the art in research for coastal aquaculture and fisheries
Assess constraints to development (not only technical constraints, but also economic, social, environmental and legal constraints and identify potential solutions;
Make recommendations for research and for interaction between researchers, extensionists and communities.
Activities
Sessions (3 days)
Aquaculture in the coastal zone
Possible topics: nutrition of marine fish, floating cage culture, mollusc culture systems, shrimp culture, fish/mollusc/shrimp reproduction, environmental effects of aquaculture, economic aspects, etc.
Fisheries management in the coastal zone
Possible topics: fisheries management, ecotrophic models of fishery systems, ecological studies, fisheries data collection systems, etc.
Interactions between research and extension
Possible topics: participation of coastal communities in research (experience, methodologies), collaboration between researchers and extensionists, etc.
Constraints to development of aquaculture and fisheries in the coastal zones
Possible topics: environmental impact, competition from other development activities, legal limitations, etc.
Working groups(1 day)
Group 1. Recommendations for research in fisheries
Group 2. Recommendations for research in aquaculture
Group 3. Recommendations for interaction between research and fishers and fisheries managers
Field trip (1 day)

Language and publication of proceedings
The symposium language is spanish. Contributions and presentations in english will be welcomed, however and all contributions will be published with abstracts in english and spanish. The proceedings will be published in a volume to be edited by the Programa UNA-LUW

Costs
Participants pay US$ 200 (includes registration, lunches and coffee breaks). With room, single occupancy : US$ 379 (arrive 9 May, depart 15 May, Hotel Fiesta).
